Pete may not be among the innocent after a fight with his girlfriend leads to a motorcycle crash, stranding him in a cabin in the middle of no where. Various puzzles await.
The gameplay begins with a short narrative backstory surrounding Pete and his loving girlfriend. After an argument, Pete decides it’s best he cool off while riding off on his motorcycle for the night. It seems luck was not on his side when he gets into an accident, injuring his leg and ruining his bike. Drained of energy and hurting badly, Pete takes up residence in an abandoned cabin in the middle of the woods.
Rusted pots and pans, dusty couches, and collapsed roofing confirms Pete’s suspicions that the place is inhabited. But when trying to leave the next day, the front door appears blocked and can’t be open from the inside. Pete will have to get creative and explore this surroundings in order to find a way out.
The player gameplay kicks in as we’re introduced to the inventory and notebook systems. Soon enough, we guide Pete through the cabin exploring the different recipe books in the kitchen or lighting the fireplace using firewood and kindling. Some rooms are locked with a padlock, requiring Pete to find the key stashed somewhere nearby.
The upper floor has seen better days. Planks of roof are missing, likely from a strong storm that ripped them off. In a bedroom, an old radio takes batteries but requires a stronger signal before it can be used. But even after searching everywhere, it’s easy to get turned around, wondering about the location of certain items.
Various parenting material can be found in the house, inductive of a family that might have once lived here. A doctor’s note from Crayshore Medical recommends mental health treatment from a child name Charlie…and the whole family. Interesting. Also interesting to note is that Pete has a medical prescription on him in his notebook. Let the physical and mental puzzles begin.
So how will Pete get out of the cabin? Perhaps through the basement? Though what he finds down there certainly raises more questions than answers. Additionally, a ham radio, a microphone, and a speaker require power in order to function. Perhaps the repair guide will come in handy in the future. The basement also contains a game of it’s own. A maze! Using a set of marbles he found, Pete must align the fins inside the maze in order to unlock a secret compartment. What’s inside? Unfortunately, the cellar door is also chained and locked. No escape that way.
A door key only gets Pete so far. Soon he’ll need to get intuitive, such as using a coin to unscrew the lock hinges on a door. To escape the cabin, Pete will have to rise to new heights. A sturdy log may be the answer. But it’ll be worth it to be outside again. A map of the area sits under a rock on a table. There will be plenty of exploring including a visit to an old barn whose irrigation / sprinkler system is offline. Perhaps Pete can get it working again by reactivating a windmill. Correct orientation of the inlet and outlet valves should get water flowing again.
In later episodes, Pete will visit a tree house, a boat house, and even recover parts of his crashed motorcycle. And I’m sure he can’t wait to get the sky lift functional again. The art of survival begins in Among the Innocent: A Stricken Tale.
